If you're a studio executive or director and you want to make a big-ol' cheesy remake like The Day the Earth Stood Still, how do you proceed? Step 1: Cast Keanu Reeves. Always cast Keanu if you're looking to bring the cheese. The man either doesn't act or he overacts with way too serious, laughable emphasis. Judging from the trailer, that's what Keanu's bringing to this great big ball of cheese. And the movie tagline? "12/12/08 is THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL" really hooks you, because, see? They're saying that the Earth will stand still because of the movie, The Day the Earth Stood Still, which opens on 12/12. Get it? Yeah, I know. It's easy to get.
And then there is " If the Earth dies, you die. If you die, the Earth survives," spoken at the end of the trailer. Which is some sort of brain teaser that I can't quite figure out, unless it really is as obvious as it seems (read: Keanu must die!).
So, yes, okay, it's really that bad and even more, but then what if I tell you that Jon Hamm is in the trailer, and he's looking all scruffy and hot and contemporary? And he's being serious and concerned and looking into Jennifer Connelly's eyes intensely? So, Jennifer Connelly + Jon Hamm ... You don't have to say anything. I know I just convinced you to see it. No one can ignore that level of smoking hotness.
