The Reader is that Kate Winslet movie that's getting all the Oscar buzz. Oh, not that one co-starring Leonardo DiCaprio. This one co-stars Ralph Fiennes. Which reminds me: Poor, poor Kate Winslet, what with all of these good-looking brilliant actors as co-stars. Her life must be difficult.
The Reader is based on the novel of the same name. It's a long, complicated story (think The English Patient) about a man who had an affair with a much older women (Winslet) when he was a teenager, only to watch her years later being tried for Nazi crimes. The trailer makes it look much better than you might expect from your run-of-the-mill Oprah's book club pick. But it's not really run-of-the-mill. It's directed by Stephen Daldry, too, who just happened to direct Nicole Kidman to an Oscar in the film version of another popular novel, The Hours. If Winslet's acting in the trailer is any indication, he might do the same for her here, finally winning her that Oscar she's been missing all of her 33 years. (Again: Poor, poor Kate. Already 33 and no Oscars? For shame!)
