I'm trying to think what in the world could possibly make me any more excited for The Wrestler than I already am. It already has a nearly perfect recipe for perfection, what with Darren Aronofsky, esteemed director of Requiem for a Dream and The Fountain. Then we've got Mickey Rourke, who might very well be making a comeback like nothing we've ever seen before. Well, except that one time last month when Jean-Claude Van Damme made that movie where he played himself. But, still, I think Rourke's might be even better. Have you seen that trailer? If not, go watch now. I'll wait here.
Okay, so tell me Rourke didn't sort of blow your mind there. Now, first of all, look at his muscles! Where did those come from? Isn't the guy in his 50s? And then there's that role? He's playing an embarrassing, ridiculous WWE type who's a little bit Dog the Bounty Hunter and a little bit Stone Cold Steve Austin. But he's also this seriously sad man who can't really catch a break. He can't get work. He is unlucky in love (until Marisa Tomei comes along, of course). He has a daughter (Evan Rachel Wood) who doesn't like him, and try to tell me he doesn't break your heart when he tells her he's just an old "broken down piece of meat," who deserves to be alone, but he just doesn't want her to hate him. It's a really sad, touching underdog story about a wrestler starring a sort of sad underdog in the form of Rourke. And man, could it ever be a triumphant return to form if that Oscar buzz is telling us anything. I think the only thing that could make this movie more awesome is if Ellen Burstyn shows up as his mother or something. I'm keeping my fingers crossed for that cameo.
