The Hardy Boys Need To Exfoliate More

At this moment, NotDean switches to the first person -- "I mean, I had to stay home. You don't think I had dreams of my own? But Dad needed me" -- looming above Sam. Sam isn't yet biting the worm, however, and demands to know where his brother is. NotDean leans in and places his hands on Sam's legs, and the camera pans out to show the two in profile, and we get a still that probably adorns a thousand work desktops. NotDean insists, "I am your brother. See, deep down, I'm just jealous. You got friends. You could have a life. Me? I know I'm a freak and sooner or later everybody's gonna leave me."

Gulp. The guppy finally takes the bait, as Sam starts addressing NotDean as his brother: "What are you talking about?" NotDean rails that he did everything Dad asked and Dad ditched him. He sort of whips this big piece of canvas off a pile of something, and echoes a line Dean had earlier in the episode: "Still, this life, it's not without it's perks," and goes on to talk about all the nice people he meets, like Blondie: "You know Dean'd bang her if he had the chance." Ooh, burn. Nice line. Nice delivery. This scene is pretty great. Close-up on NotDean's face from Sam's perspective: "Let's see what happens," and then cut to black as he throws the canvas over Sam's face.

Blondie goes to open the door to her house and finds NotDean. She puts a hand on her hip and says, "In this light, it is difficult for me to sell myself as a college student." No, wait. She says, bitchily, "Oh, hi," to the man who lied about his police credentials. NotDean anticipates her annoyance and asks if he can explain all the lying himself.

Cut back to the sewer, where Sam struggles to get out of the ropes. Some coughing in the background catches his attention and we hear Dean's voice: "That better be you, Sam, and not that freak of nature." Sam laughs with relief as Dean pulls his own canvas shroud off and we see him beyond Sam's right shoulder. Sam tells his brother about NotDean's Blondie plan, and Dean responds, "Well, he's not stupid. He picked the handsome one." So sad for Jared Padalecki, who gets those stupid Vincent Price lines ("Two dark doubles attacking loved ones in the same way") when Ackles gets good zingers like that.

Cut back to Blondie's, where she reclines with the lying liar in front of a roaring fire. Girl, please. NotDean has apparently explained who the brothers are and what they were looking for. Blondie and NotDean are bathed in ridiculously warm light from the fire. Blondie is still incredulous, so NotDean asks her how to explain the evidence any other way. Blondie wants details about this monster: "What is it? Some kind of genetic freak?" This pulls NotDean up a bit as his face tightens and he emits a terse laugh: "Huh, maybe." Oooh, burn on the genetic freak, I guess. NotDean can't take all of Blondie's genetic harassment and puts his drink down: "Evolution is about mutation, right? So maybe this thing was born human but was different. Hideous and hated. Until he learned to become someone else." Why do monsters these days always feel the need to explain their right to be monsters? Just be a monster, dude! Embrace your eviltude!
