When we return, the girls head to Smashbox Studios where Jay greets them wearing a checked fedora and shirt imprinted with a large black and white rose. He reminds them that the fashion business is, in fact, a business, and they need to know everything about every designer that's out there and understand their aesthetics. For example, they need to know which leather manufacturer fashions Donatella Versace's skin. The girls will pose as iconic designers along with professional female models who will be wearing fashions of the designers that the girls are portraying. To aid in their transformations, the girls will have the help of fashion editor and stylist Rushka Bergman. She looks exactly like the man in the moon! And she's smiling, because she's in love with the girl in the world. The very established photographer today is Francesco Carrozzini, who is maybe the Italian moped driver that Shandi hooked up with in season two. Or maybe he is an Italian version of Rob Lowe in St. Elmo's Fire. In any case: cute. Francesco tells them that today the challenge is not merely to model, but to portray personalities. They have to get into character and work it.
Rushka takes the girls and lets them know which designers they'll be portraying. Esther is Christophe Decarnin from the House of Balmain. This guy looks like a total grease monkey! How can it be? Chris gets to be Betsey Johnson, which is clearly the most fun assignment. Kayla is Vivienne Westwood, Ann is Alexander Wang, and Liz gets to be John Galliano and his child molester moustache. Jane is Marc Jacobs, Chelsey is Carolina Herrerra, and Kendal is Vera Wang. Kendal tells us that she's worried because she knows nothing about Vera Wang. She wonders how she can portray someone that she doesn't know. This is the time when you need to ask for some notes. Rushka unconvincingly says that they're going to have fun today. BEEEG TIME. She sounds like Kehaar from Watership Down.
Make-up Artist Amy Orseman tells Liz that she's going to have a bit of an androgynous look to transform into John Galliano. Liz also knows nothing about her chosen designer, and tells Jay that she's too busy at home with a kid and two jobs and cutting out her food stamps to study fashion magazines. Boo hoo. But Liz studies photos of Galliano, and notices his perpetually raised eyebrow. By a fabulous stroke of luck, she also has a perpetually raised eyebrow! Johnny Stuntz, hairstylist, applies some whack extensions to the sides of Liz's head. She doesn't need hair on the top, because she's wearing a top hat. Liz steps on set and just plain rocks it. Jay, Rushka, and Francesco make orgasm noises the whole time. Jay tells us that he knows Galliano, and it was frightening how much Liz channeled him. She stepped up her game today, though it's disappointing that she had no idea who John Galliano was. Jay tells Liz that this is her best shoot to date.
