Comic book break! Speedy is the name of Green Arrow's ward and sidekick. At this point, you might be thinking that Green Arrow has some overlap with Batman, what with being a billionaire playboy and having a teenage sidekick. And you'd be right! In fact, Green Arrow originally had an Arrowcar, an Arrowplane, and an Arrowcave. But in the comics, he eventually lost his money and became more interesting. After Green Arrow developed a social conscience, Speedy got a heroin addiction. I mention that because it seems like we're going to something like that here. Anyway, the original comic book Speedy was male, but there was a girl version, too.
Oliver and Tommy: out on the town. Tommy says the funeral blew, even though he got lucky. And he hopes to do so again at the Welcome Home Bash he's going to throw for Oliver. They go to a streetcorner in a crappy part of town. Tommy explains, "This city's gone to crap." Oliver looks mournfully at an abandoned building labeled "Queen Industrial Inc. Steel Fabrication & Welding." Instead of meaningless sex, he wants to go see Laurel. Tommy thinks that's dumb, since Laurel's the one person who isn't glad he's alive.
Legal aid office. We can go ahead and assume that the Single Female Lawyer from before is Laurel Lance. She and a friend discuss justice. That's what lawyers do, you know. They either stand around and talk about justice or they're evil corporate monsters. One or the other. Their conversation is cut short when Laurel learns that Oliver is there, poking at her clippings-and-string board.
They go out walking so Oliver can exposit that Laurel hadn't gone to law school yet when he vanished. They have some small talk about Adam Hunt before moving on to the main event: "Why are you here, Ollie?" He's here to apologize and ask Laurel not to blame Sarah. She asks "For what? Falling under your spell? How could I blame her for doing the same thing I did?" See, Oliver was Laurel's boyfriend. He tells her, "I know that it's too late to say this, but I'm sorry." She hoped that he'd rot in hell a whole lot longer than five years. She passes Tommy on the way out.
Tommy and Oliver are going back to the car, when Suddenly! A van shows up and Tommy and Oliver both get tranquilized by guys in red skull-masks! A witness gets machine-gunned to death so we know they mean business. As Oliver falls, he flashes back to the lifeboat. His father tells him he didn't build the city: "I failed it. And I wasn't the only one!"
