Burning Bosoms, Batty Bettys

Bill comes in, still looking disgruntled. Nicki flings herself across the kitchen at him, cooing that they need to talk. Without looking at her, Bill tersely says, "I have nothing to say to you, and I want to see all of your credit-card statements." Too bad Nicki didn't pick up a shredder on one of her shopping binges, huh? After he marches out, Margene breaks the silence with "Okay, please tell me: what credit-card statements?" Nicki snaps, "Margene, go! Your babies are eating bugs!" Margene bolts for the door. Nicki then flings herself onto Barb, pleading to trade nights with Barb so that Nicki can work this out with Bill. Because Barb doesn't know how to define herself if she's not actively engaging in selfless behavior (thus creating a tidy cocktail-hour debate question: is it selflessness if you're getting some measure of self-definition or gratification out of it?)...she does not shut Nicki down. We see that Margene's been listening at the door, one ear cocked to the conversation and the other to the baby monitor. Nicki helpfully spills all by babbling, "It turns out everyone on the compound's in debt -- bankruptcies left and right! It's very common nowadays!"

The doorbell rings, and Barb heads off to get it. Margene stalks over to Nicki and demands, "How come I'm always the last one to know what's going on?" Nicki hops on her high horse ("250.99, FAOschwartz.com") and snaps, "Margie, it's personal. It's no big, everything's under control. I wouldn't have told Barb anything either, but she's a snoop!"

Just then, JoJo comes in, accordion hanging off her torso like a musical threat. She eagerly says, "Hi, everyone! We're all so excited about Sunday and the engagement party with Betty. I was hoping that while I was here, I could practice a song I'm working on. It's a surprise!" After JoJo lilts this last part, Barb totally overreacts with the "Oh! Well, of course. Why don't you sit out by the pool and enjoy the fresh air." Heh. JoJo continues to sing Betty's virtues; apparently, she has this aura about her that's very calm and peaceful. As JoJo heads out, she burbles, "We fell in love with her right away. The vote was unanimous."
