April Blessing comes out of a building and goes to her car, unaware that Nicki is shadowing her until she's right up next to her, glaring holes through April's skull. April recognizes Nicki right away, calling her "Miss Grant" and giving a fake smile rather than peeing her pants like a normal human would. She tries to bond with Nicki over their shared past, but Nicki isn't playing that: "Juniper Creek is nothing like the incestuous pit that you come from." Yeah, it's an entirely different incestuous pit. April disagrees, calling polygamy "toxic, cruel, and cultish. I'm sorry you're still struggling with your past." Nicki says she's not the one struggling. She even did some digging, having talked to one of April's ex-sister-wives. Well, turns out April knows about how overwhelming the urge to return to polygamy can be, first hand. Nicki accuses her, "You are a self-absorbed woman who could not sacrifice her own needs to sustain a marriage, and then blames everyone else in the book for her own unhappiness." April looks stung -- she's heard that before -- but she quickly recovers when she realizes that Nicki's still in it. She says, "It took me years to untangle myself, Miss Grant. Years. And you'll never get your hands on Rhonda again." April gets in her car and drives off. Nicki's left thinking, Why would I want to get my hands on Rhonda? I want nothing to do with the little guttersnipe. But actually, now that you mention it…
And then Nicki's sitting in her parked car across the street from Heather's house, staking the place out. Rhonda and Heather's mom are out front gardening, while Nicki waits for her opportunity to do…something really stupid. This comes when the Tuttles' house phone rings and Heather's mom goes inside to answer it. Nicki gets out of her car and approaches Rhonda, who isn't at all happy to see her. All fake-sweetness, Nicki says they've been looking everywhere for Rhonda, and she needs to leave with Nicki. Standing there in one of those topless gardening hats with her Creeker pompadour towering amusingly over the opening in the crown, Rhonda accuses Nicki of lying to her. Which time? Nicki tries to blame April Blessing for using Rhonda. Rhonda says her story needs to be told. Nicki's like, hey, about that, did you know that Bill owns a television station? This is too sweet a prize for Rhonda to dismiss out of hand, but she's skeptical, and Nicki's nervousness isn't helping her maintain the deception. So Rhonda opens her mouth and lets out a piercing Invasion of the Body Snatchers scream, sending Nicki trotting back to her car. "She's trying to take me!" Rhonda hollers, bringing Heather's mom running back out to the yard. Nicki jumps in her car and makes her getaway. Well, that could have gone better. Wait, what am I saying? Given the alternatives, that was probably the best possible outcome for all concerned.
