I Saw What You Did Last Morning

Bill is driving Frank back home as the dulcet tones of John Denver ring out. Roman's henchmen practice a little intimidation by playing chicken with their SUVs. Frank helpfully says, "You got Alby after you, you got Roman after you. I think I'll hoof it on home from here, if you gather my meaning." Bill watches him go; in the background, a truck rumbles by with two compound kids in the back, and it seems to trigger something ugly and buried.

Bill zips home, and when he gets back to his homes plus, he takes a moment to commune with his creator: "Heavenly Father, thank you for the clear roads driving home. I am lost. Guide me. Guide me back to the path of Your righteousness. You are my Father. Show me the way, Father. Show me the way. In the name of Jesus Christ, help me. Amen." Barb is watching him, looking pained.

Bill pauses and heads into Margene's house. She's sitting on the couch, holding her youngest while the older boy's in the playpen. Is he ever not in the playpen? Bill comes in and says, very sadly, "I've been thinking about you. We are links to eternity. In front of us, family yet to come, souls yet to be born. Behind us, ancestors -- ancestors who sacrificed. We are making sacrifices to live The Principle. To keep faith. Margie, you are a valued member of this family. We weren't complete -- not until you. You made us complete. I wasn't complete until you. And our fine sons...what happened was a mistake. It'll never happen again, all right?" This is all very moving and I imagine if I hadn't seen -- and been traumatized for life by -- Frailty, I would be moved by the ways in which Bill's beliefs move him to act from the heart, but sadly, I did see Frailty, so I'm on tenterhooks waiting for him to stop with the lovin' and get on with the killin'. Margene is very moved, but then she brings up the goddamn car, so again -- it's only a matter of time before someone's swinging an ax. Perhaps it will be me. This car may well prove my undoing.

Bill wanders off, strangely deflated. He heads over to Nicki's and is about to get his $10 worth out of that little blue pull when his mom calls and gives him whatfor. We get a shot of an automatic fish toy perpetually swimming in the bright blue pool, and that artificial tableau seems to represent everything about how trapped Bill really is. His conversation over, he gulps the pill and heads in to Nicki, still lost.
