Bill's visiting Joey in lockup because, as you recall, Joey confessed to poisoning Alby in order to protect Wanda. It's a little awkward for the brothers, not being able to talk about what really happened with a guard standing right there, while Bill tries to find out why Joey confessed. Joey tells Bill about the deal he made with Roman, to vote to allow the purchase of a company that Roman wants in exchange for Roman's dropping the investigation into Alby's poisoning. Shocked, Bill asks if Joey voted the way Roman wanted. Joey says no, since the "state got involved." Indeed, last week's episode was set on the day before the vote in question, so Joey was actually arrested the night before. It's a little hard to believe how much happens on this show in one day, and you know that I, of all people, don't make that statement lightly. Joey says, "Wanda can't be in here. She couldn't make it." Does Joey not know that they have separate prisons for women? I suppose not, if Roman has forbidden his faithful to subscribe to cable TV. Bill tells Joey not to make any more decisions without talking to him first. Joey points out that he only slipped up the one time. I wonder which time he's counting. You'll also notice that he doesn't mention the tape Roman has of Bill calling himself "Mr. Cover-Up." One assumes Bill will be finding out about that eventually, though.
Barb knocks impatiently on Margene's door. The younger wife is clearly getting a late start on the day, blearily answering the door in her shorty pajamas and robe. "Movie night," Margene says by way of explanation. Barb lectures her on getting as much sleep as she can now that she's pregnant. Like Margene's memories of having to sleep on her side all night and getting up to pee three or four times an hour aren't fresher than Barb's. In any case, that discussion kind of gets derailed when Ben comes out of the house in his boxer shorts, handing the baby off to Margene as he goes. Barb wonders what the hell that's all about. Ben makes the excuse that Teeny kicks the wall in her sleep. "Get some earplugs," Barb says, telling him it can't be good for him to sleep on Margene's couch. Then she suggests Ben go open his birthday cards from Grandma Lois and Aunt Cindy. "I'm saving them for my birthday," is Ben's understandably confused response to this rather weird request. As he heads to his own house, Barb hands Margene a stenciling kit -- there's a new nursery to decorate now, you know -- and rushes off to class, promising to be back home for book club by 1:00. Margene looks like she's already mentally setting her snooze alarm for 12:59.
