Nucky wants to know what's happening with Smith and Daugherty. "My understanding is that they're no more than close friends," Means smirks, "base rumors to the contrary." Nucky's all, "Ha ha, but really." Means tells him that would be another conversation... in another room. Nucky asks what THAT would cost him, but Means asks him how far he thinks he could trust a man who could be bought on the first day. The answer to that is obvious. Means takes Nucky's envelopes and says he's an admirer of the way Nucky has turned trouble to his own advantage. He adds Nucky's envelope to the stacks of cash on the couch.

From outside the door, a voice calls, "Hello?" Both Means and Nucky are silent, but Means calls for Nucky to come and look through the peephole. There, he sees George Remus, puzzling over the fishbowl setup, before dropping his cash inside. Means whispers to Nucky, asking him if he'd do him the favor of waiting for Mr. Remus to leave and then leaving by another door. And do give his regards to Mr. Rothstein, "I do believe you are seeing him next." He flashes Nucky a great big grin. What an eccentric character. Lots of eccentric characters this season. I guess we're going the other way from sad old Jimmy Darmody.

At St. Teresa's, Margaret pays a visit to Dr. Mason in his office. He still really does not seem to care for her at all. She approaches him in supplication; allowing that she was not very receptive when he approached her about the pre-natal issue last time, but it's been bothering her ever since. She's been to visit Mrs. Scherer, she tells him. "She's rather a difficult woman, really," which is putting it lightly. "Perhaps she's wary of well-meaning strangers," Mason says, pointedly. Dr. Mason is not very old (my roundabout way of saying I'd hit it, I guess), but my sense is that he's had a little experience with philanthropists with short attention spans. "Have I done something to offend you?" she asks, and they kind of bicker back and forth about whether his bad attitude with her reflects his overall bedside manner. He prods at her about whether her frustration with him is really a frustration with herself (I assume he's referring to her inability to do anything of substance with her well-meaning philanthropy). "You have a maddening way," she snaps at him. She says he seems to be blaming her for something, though she doesn't know what. He says he's not sure why they're even having this conversation, then, so she leaves in a huff. Three steps out the door, though, she spots Dr. Landau, and she immediately knows which battle she'd rather be fighting, so she retreats back into Mason's office for Round 2.
