A police car pulls into an alley behind a parked cop car. Ray's partner isn't Gedrick, but some young, attractive man. Ray radios in asking if there's contact with the other police officers on the scene. There isn't. Ray says they're going in. "Should we wait for backup?" the rookie asks. "We are the backup," Ray answers. He tells the rookie to stay close and keep cool. They enter the building. Ray gives two quick sniffs and then curses: "Damn! Gunpowder!" The scary music kicks it up a notch. They creep down the darkened hallways. Ray starts to pant. He slowly pushes open a door. They jump in. They're in the lobby of what looks like a large bank. It's empty. Ray inches closer. The bodies of two officers are on the ground. Ray calls in and asks for help. The two cops are dead. One is a woman.

Cut to later. An evidence card lies beside what looks like a mallet. Fearless asks Ray where his partner is. "Desk," Ray answers. "Yours?" Fearless says that Wahlberg's enjoying a "little family time." Ray and Fearless have decided that the two cops who were killed must have been ambushed, since neither of them was dumb enough to rush in unprotected. Fearless says that if they had been, they wouldn't have been shot in the back. Ray says he figures there were two shooters -- one behind each tall pillar in the building. They shot each cop multiple times. Fearless asks where the safe is. Ray points off in the distance, and they head in that direction. Fearless asks what's in it. "Gold coins," Ray answers. No idea of how much they were worth yet. Ray says that this might be related to the string of safe robberies they've had lately, even though nobody was killed on those. They discuss the secondary alarm the owner had on this place: a dedicated line to the police with an "uninterruptable" power source. Fearless notices that the Caller ID is blinking on the dedicated phone line, which means someone had to have called: "The last call came in at 4:06 PM." Ray says that was just before they got there. They've got some kind of new-fangled Caller ID that makes reading your incoming calls much more suspenseful, only releasing information one tiny tidbit at a time, allowing you to guess who made the incoming call. In this case, the call was from a number so amazing, so shocking, that Ray and Fearless won't just tell us -- they have to *69 it and let us hear for ourselves as the receptionist asks, "LAPD Central Storm Desk? LAPD Central Storm Desk?" Fearless lies that they're just checking the line. "There's no way," Ray says, taking a few steps away from the phone so that he and Fearless can have a quiet conversation, shielding themselves from absolutely nobody. Sometimes the blocking on this show really confuses me. Ray even starts whispering. They're in a safe, aren't they? Or at least the most interior office? Fearless explains to the dumbest of the viewers that somebody from inside the LAPD had to call the bad guys to tip them off that the cops were on their way. Ray asks what he's saying. Fearless explains it again, this time with much more intensity, repetition, and self-righteousness. Opening credits.
