This One's For the Children

Pan up from a Barbie doll on a register to the girl handing a bald Russian Mafia man his check. Another Russian man is pleading about some kind of dream -- something that involves money. Solonick gives Lara some money and then calls her back to give her some more. She thanks him and smiles. He pinches her cheek. The Russian man begging for money promises to pay back every dime. Solonick shoots him in the stomach. Nobody in the restaurant even flinches. Not one noise or head motion towards the man shooting the other man three times. Just Lara in the back, who somehow heard all of this even though she wasn't in the room, crouching to hide behind nothing as she watches. We end with an insult: the Russian song playing in the background comes to a close with a "Hey!"

Teresa. "This is the, uh...third Russian shooting this month, isn't it?" she asks. Only three shootings in one month? That Teresa, she's everywhere. And right now, she's flirting with Wahlberg, since she didn't almost die last week and he doesn't have a wife who almost died last something-or-other of something-they-never-told-us. Anyway, Teresa and Wahlberg flirt over the intricacies of the Russian Mafia, and how they cut off the fingertips of their victims so that there are no fingerprints. Wahlberg: "We got twenty-seven people here at the time of the shooting, but none of them saw anything. You know why?" "Must like their fingers!" Teresa says with much glee. Wahlberg waves back, smiling, flirting, "Fingertips!" he mouths with a blush. These guys are never happier than when there's a murdered body on the ground between them. Where's Gedrick with the ice cream? Wahlberg tells Teresa that she'd make a hell of a detective. Yeah, she's got incredible deductive skills -- the kind you get from watching one hour of television.

Fearless calls Teresa over to tend to Lara's cut knee. She's got broken glass in her leg. Fearless asks again whether she saw anything. "Nothing," Lara's Russian mother answers. Fearless doesn't believe her and starts pressuring Lara to tell him how she got her knee cut. He pressures her until she disobeys her mother and tells Fearless that she did see what happened. Lara's mother chastises Fearless for bullying a little girl into doing his job for him. Fearless promises Lara's mother that Lara won't have to testify; he just wants to know what she saw. The mother asks why she should believe him. Teresa butts in here to say that she believes Fearless because she knows he's a good guy and that he's true to his word. Fearless is totally zoned out, staring off at nothing, looking shady as hell instead of confirming what Teresa just said. "Um," he says before making Lara disobey her mother. "I saw who shot the man," Lara says. "Right there," she adds, pointing. She says that Solonick shot him.
