Meet The Recruits

4:45 PM. First Run. The recruits jog down the road, and DI Rosenbum asks if they have any questions. He reminds them that it's three quarters of a mile down, and three quarters of a mile back, for a total of one and a half miles. This will be their shortest run. Yet another reason (besides the early wake-up time) that I could never be on this show. ["Oh, yeah. Count me out." -- niki] But at least I acknowledge that now, instead of quitting on the first day. They start the run. DI Taylor is the turnaround point, and she yells out their times as they reach her and head back. DI Rosenbum is first, and Recruit Park is right behind him. Recruit Thomson rounds the corner with all his flab. Recruit Whitlow is right behind him. Recruit Lauder rounds the turn and informs DI Taylor that he's "out of gas." Heh. Thomson has crossed the finish line, and Recruit Jackson congratulates him. Everyone seems to have crossed the finish line.

Except for Recruit Haar. You know, the pig farmer. She's trucking right along at a snail's pace, but it's obvious that she's doing her best. In an interview, Recruit Thomson says that he "can't see how somebody that challenged, physically, could mentally go on." What he's trying to say is that she's overweight and out of shape. I feel a little guilty for picking on Thomson's flab, and not Haar's. But I don't like Thomson. And this is my recap. So there. DI Rosenbum is jogging alongside Haar. After they round the turn, DI Taylor joins them, and gives Haar encouragement. Back at the finish line, Recruit Whitlow wonders if they should go back and give her encouragement, but she's told that Recruit Wolf, the squad leader, has already gone. DI Rosenbum tells Haar that she's doing good, and "this is an accomplishment right now, already, that [she'll] never forget." Okay, I'm in love with him. He helped out the fat girl. As a fellow fattie, I sympathize with her. Of course, I'm not on the show. But anyway, do you think I have a chance? And more importantly, do you think my boyfriend will mind? Recruit Wolf jogs up and joins them, encouraging Recruit Haar. The music is all sad. Recruit Wolf tells her that the whole squad is pulling for her. Haar gets a cramp and slows down to a walk, but DI Rosenbum and Recruit Wolf get her through it. In an interview, Recruit Haar says that when she rounded the corner and saw her squad cheering and waving for her, she knew she had to get there. If she wants to continue with the boot camp, she might want to invest in a better sports bra, because her business is flying all over the place. I make jokes to hide the fact that I'm tearing up as Haar breaks into a sprint for the last leg of the run. Her squad hugs her as she cries and drinks water. Haar voice-overs that she's never run a mile and a half, and probably couldn't walk a mile without getting winded. Haar concludes, "But I did it!" DI Taylor asks Haar how she feels, and encourages her to give a guttural yell, and she does. I love Haar. DI Rosenbum asks the squad what just happened. Someone replies, "Haar dug deep, sir." Recruit Brown has tears in her eyes. In an interview, Recruit Whitlow says that Haar breaks her heart because "she is putting out more than anybody, and I don't know if she can do it." The squad jogs back, chanting "Hoo-ha, hoo-ha, sucking it up, sucking it up."
