Giles starts to walk off, but she catches up to him and asks if Miss Calendar is okay. Giles, forlornly: "The hills are not alive." Aw, again. He goes on that she'll probably never forgive him, and that maybe she shouldn't. Buffy: "Maybe you should." This is really sweet scene, and illustrates a rare dynamic on the show: while Giles played Watcher/parental figure to many other characters on the show, Buffy's the only one who got to play Watcher to him at any point, to the best of my recollection. Giles says he didn't ever want Buffy to learn about his past, and Buffy admits that it was scary. "I'm so used to you being a grownup, and then I find out that you're a person." Giles says that most grownups are, and ruefully goes on that they can be "short-sighted, foolish people." Buffy smiles that they finally have something in common, and that that's a little weird, but "kind of okay." They realize that they're supposed to be training, and Buffy says she has the perfect music for the occasion. She encourages him to say what's on his mind. Giles manages, "It's not music; it's just meaningless sounds." Buffy: "There! Feel better?" Giles: "Yes. Thanks." Aw. A nice ending to a fairly uneven episode. As they walk into the library, Giles says, "Bay City Rollers. Now that's music." Buffy, the Typing Monkeys, and me: "I didn't hear that."
