Things get serious again as Buffy analyzes herself and admits that she purposefully cut herself off from the Junior Misses and her friends, because she knew that not all of them were going to survive. She gets upset and stands up, chastising herself for "making excuses" about a problem that she's had for quite a while. "Being the Slayer made me different. But it's my fault I stayed that way. People are always trying to connect to me. I just slip away. You should know." I feel so sad for all of Buffy's other friends, but especially Dawn and Xander, because she has turned her back so thoroughly on the love and admiration they had for her. Anyway, for a brief and shining moment, I had hopes that maybe Buffy had finally learned something about herself, but I have the sneaking suspicion that she's far too self-absorbed to make any actual effort towards changing, so she's chosen to reveal all of this to Spike -- the ONE person she knows would tell her that she's fine just as she is. Spike remembers a certain amount of "connecting" that went on between them last season, but Buffy brushes him off with a coy, "Please. We were never close. You just wanted me because I was unattainable." Spike bristles at this. He stands. Buffy sits. I suddenly feel like I'm back in high school, watching drama club friends trying to block a scene when they only have one chair and a limited amount of creativity. Blah, blah, blah. Spike speechifies. Bored now. My personal vision of what constitutes "romantic" hasn't appeared on this show in years. Buffy's a little bored too, because she asks him if she can lie down for a nap. I guess Spike has that effect on us.
