Becca is watching angsty music videos on TV, like a good sullen teenager. Horace walks in wearing a suit and tries to get her to get up and ready to go to Mac's speech. I don't know, the weight of those eyebrows might make it kind of hard for her to move very quickly. Ah, no, not this time -- she brats that she's not going to go. When Horace can't believe it, she falls back on the oldest bad excuse in the book, saying she isn't feeling well. Upstanding Horace can't believe it, but Becca's not listening, pulling out the ace that their mom told her not to be a hypocrite. "Hey, look, you get to be John-John, and I'll be Patti Davis." Fed up, Horace finally lays it down for her: "If you don't come, that's all that's gonna be on her mind. Right now, at this time, do you want to be responsible for that? Have a sense of HISTORY." Oh, Horace, you had me until that last line. Becca, however, squirms a bit.
Mac, meanwhile, tinkers with her speech while Amy sits next to her in the limo with a cup of juice. The phone rings, and Rod grabs it, realizes that's not his job now, and hands it to Jim. Amy starts asking Mommy questions, and as Rod tries to shush her, Mac just smiles and humors Amy as she works. The car hits a bump in the road, and to the surprise of no one, the red juice spills all across Mac's blouse. I understand that she'd be in the limo, being the youngest child, but watching this scene repeatedly, I see no sippy-cup top, and that's just dumb and contrived. No child in the history of red juice is going to be allowed in a moving vehicle with an open-topped cup. My mom STILL wouldn't allow me in the car like that. ["I know, as if. But if an Independent can be half of a Republican presidential ticket, I don't know why the open juice cup in the car is the contrivance we should quibble with." -- Wing Chun] Rod is frustrated and stressed out, almost more annoyed because Mac is retaining her calm though she's not sure what to do. Kelly has an idea, and offers Mac her scarf.
We cut to KiriKiri prison, Lagos, Nigeria. A baby cries. Two men open a gate and pull out a terrified woman and her baby.
Back in Washington, voices are telling the nation that we're moments away. The resourceful Mother/President is wearing Kelly's scarf tucked artfully under her jacket as a blouse replacement. Mac and Rod have a brief moment together. Rod: "Mackenzie..." Mac: "So do you hate me?" "No, I love you. Go win the country." There is obvious relief on Mac's face, which we've all felt when we're worried that someone is upset with us. I like that you really do believe Rod supports her and is letting go of his own annoyance at this point.
