Pity The Nevada Traveler

Beth continues, "Giving me Martin was the only good thing that Walter ever did. I don't know why he did it, but it wasn't out of the goodness of his heart." Gil just stares at her. Perhaps he's so overwhelmed by the plethora of unanswered questions, he honestly doesn't know what to say next.

Well, don't go looking for enlightenment in this scene. Gil just heads into the lab and begins examining the bloody white shirt Walter was wearing at the beginning of this episode. Who knows why? Not me.

In fact, the number of questions I have accumulated with every plot point. As much as I like the idea of having a case where the evidence is largely inconclusive and the motives are murky, because it's a refreshing break from the formulaic clue-clue-solved! pattern most of the episodes have, that kind of unresolved crime has to have a decent narrative arc surrounding it. Ars Poetica groupie that I am, if my pity and fear is to be aroused courtesy of the protagonist, I expect some sort of catharsis for my troubles. This, on the other hand, was the television equivalent of going on tour at the Winchester Mystery House: it gets hyped up as being the product of mysterious mind, but is actually proof that winging it without a clue as to where you're going to end up only leaves an artless hulk and a lot of loose ends. Bleah.
