It could have been the cut across his carotid (which we see, in TMICam close-up, from the hockey blade's POV), or the significant trauma the basilar artery also suffered, or the blood flooding through the intimal space and possibly causing syncope. Primer for those of us who are not well-versed in human anatomy: the basilar artery is a cerebral vessel, so it affects blood flow to the brain; it can be responsible for strokes and migraine headaches. Syncope is a sudden, brief loss of consciousness. I couldn't find a lucid definition of intimal space. Perhaps the forum can help there.
