Steve is in no mood to get philosophical. He starts making the confrontation physical, lunging at Jarry in the cage. Jarry tells Steve that if he tries to come after him, should he attempt to leave his cage, that Steve would seal his fate "as irrevocably as the tyrant crossing the Rubicon!" This just makes Steve more angry. "Is he askin' to suck my prick?!" One of his fellow angry mobbers implores Jarry to explain the statement, but he says he'll explain nothing "under duress." Meanwhile, in the background, Wolcott removes himself from the area of potential violence, as Cy and his henchmen all give each other the secret sign to be prepared for the fight.

Finally, Steve and his goons get in such a rage, they pull the cage down, and Jarry with it. They're just about to kill him, I assume, when Bullock walks in, asking Cy, who is casually standing out of the way, "What the fuck, Tolliver?" "The mob is an angry creature, Sheriff," Cy says, by way of explanation, and Bullock pulls his gun. He fires into the air, telling the hooples that Jarry is under protection of the law. Then he fires another round, just for fun. "You've got their fuckin' attention!" Cy whines.

Back on the booze bench, Jane and the NG are well into their afternoon. Who knows what they're talking about, but Jane is shaking her head, saying, "Don't get me started. Do not get me started, little N*gger General." The NG pauses and says "If somethin's got to go in front of N*gger General, and...don't it always...I'd prefer 'short' to 'little.'" Jane says that's a deal, and that she's a girl who keeps a bargain. "Or," she says, "I could just call ya plain N*gger General!" NG: "Call me just plain N*gger." Jane: "Short Plains N*gger!" They both laugh, and the NG offers a last option: "N*gger of the High Dessert!"

They don't have time to come up with anymore, because across the thoroughfare, they see Steve and the Goodie Mob rolling out of the Bella Union. They remain riled up. The NG takes this moment to make his exit, thanking Jane for the conversatin' and the whiskey. Jane, for her part, sees Bullock walking in her direction. "Who is that, the fuckin' Sheriff?" she asks. "Flanked by some assholes?"

Indeed it is. Jarry tells Bullock that he feels no less manhandled by him than he did by ol' Steve. Bullock assures him that if "they still had you, by now you'd be feeling worse." Bullock sees Jane and tells her he needs the lock-up. Jane drunkenly and officially asks him to wait until he's cleared out Bill's robe. Jarry looks disgusted. Steve is looking on at all this, and turns his head just in time to see the NG run around the corner.
