Moments later, he tends her wounds in his remarkably douchey way -- "I'm a doctor, I have like a diploma and everything" -- and before you know it, they are almost about to kiss... but then they don't kiss. I guess Joanna remembered who she was or something. Or maybe being bloodied in a fight protecting the laptop of a person who just lied to her face isn't the biggest turn-on, who can say.
You can immediately see where Edward's coming from, in re: Roger.
Roger: "The board gets no joy out of asking you to relinquish your seat..."
Edward: "Yeah I realize that, Roger."
Roger: "But really, your poor family. It's about them."
Flashback! Tater was not buying Vivian's starry-eyed dedication to her cause of ruining their family business and pointed out that she'd only been sober for six weeks -- so I guess she got pregnant and become a convert on basically the same day? -- and also that he was ambivalent because he had to protect his family, just like Roger is saying. Goddamned Roger.
"What about the test victims? Who's gonna protect them? Look, I know that doing the right thing matters to you. You promised me that you would help me. So please, help me!"
Robert: "Edward? You've been in a flashback for like an hour."
Edward: "Fine. I realize that my face has been all over the papers with vile insinuations and suggestions of all sorts of terrible things..."
Roger: "-- Well, I know I speak for the board when I tell you how relieved..."
Edward: "Not finished, Roger. Let me finish, Roger. Let me remind you these are empty accusations and I've never been tried for..."
Edward: "ROGER. Didn't your wife have to pay off an angry shylock* to save your legs after you lost a fortune betting on the Jets? The Jets, Roger."
Everybody: "Goddamned Roger."
Edward: "And Carl, were you not the exceptionally ardent Client #3 in the Fifth Avenue Madam's black book? Anyone else here surprised Carl's a biter? And Sharon, what was that plea deal you made when you hit that kid on the bicycle in Southampton and shattered his spine?"
*(Really?) Anyway, I guess that showed them. I guess when the entire Board of Directors is after you, blackmailing them all at once is a good thing to do. Meanwhile Robert is this close to just collapsing in church giggles, because that was such a Bowers power play. It is adorable, like, as Garber-cute as when he got all tickled about how Hunter keeps breakin' kids' knees and shit. I know a lot of it has to do with Garber, but I also find this character fascinating. He's so, so sweet and so, so scary at the same time.
