Amanda: "So you heard Gordon died."
Connor: "Yeah, it sucks. For me."
Amanda: "The Votan part of him was dead, the human part was a lie. He didn't fit in anywhere. He was a loaded weapon waiting to go off."
But somehow, she says, she can't stop imagining him: Beautiful, strong, young Gordon McClintock, knocking on some door somewhere. About to sweep a little old lady off her feet.
Connor: "You're insanely romantic."
Amanda: "That's all Defiance is."
Realizing she's not going to stop, Connor Lang decides to level with her. Real talk.
Amanda: "Is that not what we've been doing? Big surprise."
Connor: "E-Rep wants into Defiance."
Amanda: "They want my territory and they want my gulanite and they want to turn us all into American robots."
Connor: "Essentially. But it's jumped some levels, lately. Remember Ambassador Tennety?"
Amanda: "That bitch? She tried to rob the town and blackmail me and kill me..."
Connor: "She's convinced her boss [a military guy we'll meet next week, wearing a brigadier's beret] to make you a priority. Sentiment is that Defiance would work better under a more pliable leader."
Amanda: "Fuck that. I know my people."
Connor: "We don't all share your romance."
Amanda: "You're talking about murdering me."
Connor: "Whatever it takes to get you off the board. I love you and I want you to come with me to New York, yes, but I also need you out of Defiance, so you'll survive. Do you understand what it took for me to come here? Twice?"
Amanda: "Didn't ask for it. Don't want it. I'm not a sellout and I'm sure as hell not a damsel in distress."
Connor: "You've made yourself cold and inviolate, St. Finnegan. No connections to slow you down. And that is gross."
Amanda: "Don't talk about me like that. It hurts."
Connor: "If you'd trusted me and talked it out, I would have surprised you. We'd still be together. If you'd had just a little faith, we'd be a family. The Earth Republic is coming for you. I wish it had worked better, you'd have been a good fit."
Everything follows from what Rafe saw. When he drops by the jailhouse to return Nolan's weapon, he's happier than he should be.
Nolan: "Returned the gun and everything. Decent of him."
