When they find the hypersleep sac with Gordon McClintock still trashing around in it, Nolan cuts him out of it and he spills, naked, into Nolan's arms.
McClintock: "Are you Americans?"
Nolan, chuckling: "Back when they existed, yes. Welcome home."
McClintock: "I gotta call my wife and tell her I'm... where am I? Alien Town?"
Nolan: "St. Louis, kind of."
McClintock: "Wrong, try again."
Nolan: "Luckily, you're a celebrity, so I can convince you a lot easier of what's going on. You're Gordon McClintock, NASA. Commander of the International Space Station Bravery. Right? So Commander, what year is this and what's the last thing you remember?"
McClintock: "We were shuttling down in the Soyuz module and... did we crash?"
Connor Lang: "Mayor Rosewater! I see you let the flowers I sent you die right there on your desk. A testament to our love?"
Amanda: "More like a testament to my assistant's inability to manage time appropriately. Why are you here?"
Connor Lang: "That sex beast Eddie Braddock blew me up! He escaped, into the video game of this TV show, so I'm here to follow up. And other reasons."
Amanda: "I will figure those out, then. Let's go eat street food so I can demonstrate how much I love my town without saying it out loud."
Connor Lang: "You have certainly outlasted the razor rain of last week! However, I am still not impressed."
Amanda: "WHY ARE YOU HERE."
Connor Lang: "You're really good at this whole 'being a politician' thing. Wasn't it Jimmy Carter who invented the 'buy a guy a corndog and then scream the same question at his face to surprise him' maneuver?"
They never point this out, and you can't really see it until the end of the scene -- a heartbreaking and brilliant reveal -- but the lion's share of this conversation takes place with Amanda's literal back against the Defiant Few statue from the pilot. That Iwo Jima/St. Finnegan one, where the soldiers are rescuing all the children one by one.
What we know is that Connor Lang is a Representative for the Fourth Province in the General Assembly of the E-Rep -- which follows the US Constitution and was formed from the leavings of the UN -- which oversees the Senate, so he's way up there, but also makes him a direct-report for the territory Governors in his Province. So if, say, Amanda became a Governor (or Defiance became an E-Rep territory) he or someone like him would be her boss.
