Dexter and Lilah are having some soda pool-side, somewhere. "You going to tell me how you're doing?" she asks. "I'm fine." "Come on, Dex. Open up." "Very fine?" She tells him he has to try harder. "What are you thinking?" "I'm afraid we're...done, you and I." "You're serious? You're...'breaking up' with me?" "Actually, I don't think I want to answer any more questions." Flashback time.
"Listen, Dexter," says Harry. "Whatever you think is right is wrong. He asks you a question, I want you to think of your answer first, then tell him the exact opposite, okay?" A bit later, a man says, "So, let's just jump in, alright? Does it make you angry when your teachers tell you what to do?" "No," replies young Dex. "Are you often bored?" "No." "Have you ever killed an animal?" "No, never."
Back at the table, Dexter says he needs to get back to work. "Thanks, for everything." Lilah just nods to excuse him.
Mathstor walks up to LaGuerta at the station and mentions that he heard about "Pascal's little meltdown." "She's been under a lot of stress." Mathstor calls her out on defending her again, and LaGuerta mentions that Pascal is her superior, after all. "You know, I may have misjudged you, Maria. Maybe you are more than a political animal. You just might be a real cop." He goes on to tell her she's got the position of Lieutenant back, if she wants it. "Pascal just set women in the department back twenty years. It's up to you to turn that around." Hmm, we'll see about that. I was just starting to like the new, humbled LaGuerta. But why was she being so nice to Pascal this whole time? Does she feel guilty for something?
"There it is," VOs Dexter, who's standing outside the BHB morgue. "Like a gigantic white whale. My Moby Dick." Angel walks up, and says, "Man, this heat. I can't take it. I gotta get in my car before I fuckin' melt." Jackpot! "Which is exactly what needs to happen to my dearly departed friends!" he VOs.
Dex walks over to his minivan, and there's Lilah, checking out her makeup in the side-view. "Lilah, what are you doing here?" "Hey, Dexter. I've been thinking about you 'breaking up' with me, and, well...I don't think it's in your best interests." Dexter looks at her for a long moment, and says, "I'm tired, and hot, and I have somewhere to be." She stops him: "I think you should give me another chance." "There's nothing you can do to help me. It's not even you, it's me. I am who I am, and nobody's going to change that." "Whatever you think you are, you don't have to be that." "That's where you're wrong." Lilah tells him to stop judging himself, and that there are no absolutes: "No one's all good or all evil." Dexter leans in close like he's going to kiss her, but instead shoves aside, saying, "You're just going to have to trust me on this." She yells at him, saying that he turns himself into a monster in order to avoid responsibility for what he does. He counters by asking her if she really believes there aren't monsters in this world: "You don't believe people are evil?" She shakes her head, vaguely. "I'll show you evil."
