Yeah, Pencil Me In

"You wanna make a family. But you can't stay in this child. It's wrong. You can't steal any more friends for yourself." Chloe sobs: "I am alone." Her dad gets to thumping again in the closet like a coming storm: "I'm coming to hurt you!" Like the end of playtime. Chloe shakes and trembles weirdly, her face perfectly impassive. The door begins to pound: "I'm coming." Whether you're done playing or not. The Doctor asks Trish how she calms her daughter down: "Chloe's having a seizure. When she has nightmares, what do you do?" She sings. He motions her to the bedside and tells her to start singing, even as the hellish shouts continue, from the other side of the door. It's a favorite of mine: "Kookaburra sits in the old gum tree, merry merry king of the bush is he..." Chloe's dad calls her name from the wardrobe, over and over, louder and louder. Trish strokes her daughter's hair and continues to sing: "Laugh, Kookaburra, laugh, Kookaburra, gay your life must be." Eventually, the banging and shouting subside. You create your own undoing: it's nothing less than the things you haven't let go yet, coming back to get you. Chloe sleeps. Trish weeps, ashamed: "He came to her because she was lonely...Chloe, I'm sorry..." She buries her head in Chloe's shoulder, sobbing.
