Back on the estate, Jackie is standing outside in the cold, holding Elton's jacket, wearing a face. Calls him Caliban with a look. "Right," he says, not noticing. "Let's get inside, then, the pizza's getting cold..." And with hardness, with cold anger, Jackie fills him in: "I went in your coat. For once in my life, I thought, I'll pay. I thought, he's such a nice man, he won't accept anything. So I'll just slip a tenner in his pocket. And look what I found." A picture of Rose. Elton starts to backtrack and eat shit, promising he can explain, and Jackie nods wisely. Hard: "I bet you can." Elton swears he wasn't being pervy or anything -- "I wasn't after her! I was looking for the Doctor." Jackie nods: "I worked that out. Because it's never me, is it?" Elton admits that's how it started, but begs her to understand that he's changed his mind. Jackie looks at him honestly: "Let me tell you something. About those who get left behind. Because it's hard. And that's what you become: hard. But if there's one thing I've learnt, it's that I will never let her down, and I'll protect them both until the end of my life. So whatever you want, I'm warning you: back off." Elton swears he only wanted to meet the Doctor, and Jackie lets a little bit of it show, finally: "I thought you liked me." Disgusted. Elton swears that he does; Jackie throws his jacket in his face, angry tears starting up: "Just get out of here! I said get out! And leave me alone!" She runs back to the flat, in tears. Elton stands on the street with the pizza and his jacket. No Rose, no Mickey. No Elton. Drink.
Elton shrieks at Victor, back at HQ: "And she was right! It's shameful! We used that woman..." Victor screams right back: "I knew I couldn't trust you! You broke cover, you stupid little man! You failed Step Five!" Elton explains that Step Five can go fuck itself: "It's all gone wrong, Mr. Kennedy. Ever since you turned up. We used to come here every week, and we'd have a laugh. We were friends. No wonder they stopped coming...I mean, there's no Bliss any more...Even Bridget, she hasn't turned up." Skinner notes that he's been calling and calling, with no result. "And who can blame her?" asks Elton. "I'm sorry, Victor, but you're on your own. Because I am leaving! And so are you, Mr. Skinner! And as for you, Ursula..." He stands above her desk, looking down at her. Down, down, down. "You're coming with me. And we're going to the Golden Locust, and we're gonna have a Chinese." Ursula asks what that's got to do with uprising, and Elton is both sweet and awkward explaining that it doesn't: "I mean you and me. Together. Having a meal. If you want." She's touched. He has touched her. "Oh...I'd love it!" Victor tells them that they can't leave: "You'll never know what he was doing, the Doctor! You'll never know what he was doing in your house all those years ago!" Elton nods: "No. I'll never know." He's okay with that. The Doctor can't make you braver or smarter or less alone: it's you who does that. The only place in the world where perfection is possible is the fiction of the TARDIS -- the rest of us get by on the broken and approximate, even those demand bravery.
