Reinette and the Doctor enter her bedroom and stand in the doorway. Boom chicka. "It's not a copy. It's the original. I had it moved here and was exact in every detail." Far off thou art, but ever nigh; I have thee still, and I rejoice; I prosper, circled with thy voice; I shall not lose thee tho' I die. The Doctor realizes that Reinette's not talking about anything particularly dancey. "The fireplace from your bedroom," he gasps, starting forward into her bedroom. "When did you do this?" Many years before: "In the hope that a door once opened may someday be opened again. One never quite knows when one needs one's Doctor." They smile at each other; there is a soft place in the middle of both smiles that you have to look for, and it says goodbye. "It appears undamaged; do you think it will still work?" she asks. The Doctor Excellent Questions that she broke the bond with the spaceship when she moved it, so it was offline when he stupidly rode a horse through the time window, but since "the link is basically physical," he can reconnect it: "It's still physically here." The softness in Reinette's smile travels upward, to her eyes. (Historical Casanova and historical Reinette were friends, I heard; David Tennant and Sophia Myles started dating after this. There's acting and then there's weird perfect.) He taps the woodwork and talks about luck: "Which might just mean, if I'm lucky..." Define luck. He finds the spot he's looking for and beams: "Loose connection! Need to get a man in!" He bangs on the mantelpiece, and asks for Reinette's blessing as the fireplace begins to turn: "Wish me luck!" She says no (good girl), and his smile fades.
