Toby stands on the surface of a ruined world, naked, no spacesuit, glorying in the black sun, back to the porthole. Scooti stares. Toby finally turns, covered in symbols, eyes red and hateful, and breaks into a malicious grin when he sees her. She murmurs to herself that there's no air, no atmosphere, and with a terrible smile, Toby raises his hand, beckoning. Scooti reaches out toward him, fascinated. She is nearly in tears. After a moment, she breaks free and tells Toby to stop, shouting at the glass; his smile fades, and he clenches the outstretched hand. A crack bursts across the porthole glass; Scooti runs to the door. But it will not open. The cracks widen and the sounds are terrible; she continues to scream and pound upon the door. Scooti loses all control, screaming wildly. And the pressure breaks, finally, taking all the air and Scooti with it, still screaming with her last breath.
Everything shakes. Rose and the Doctor are now down in the Ood pen, as Danny works on the balcony above. The computer signals the hull breach, scaring Danny. "Which section?" he asks. Zach picks himself up off the floor in the control room and calls to the Sanctuary Base: "Everyone evacuate 11 to 13, we've got a breach! The base is open. Repeat: the base is open." Jefferson and his guards head down a corridor, sparks everywhere. Lots of running about. Zach works overtime at the controls, trying to contain the oxygen field away from the breach. Everybody runs and yells and runs and yells. Jefferson snags Toby, who's back to looking normal, and Toby falls on his face in the corridor. Jefferson slams a hatch closed, and the computer confirms that the breach is sealed. After a moment, Jefferson checks off everybody but Scooti. Silence, static. No signal. Zach locates her bio chip in Habitation 3, and everybody sighs with relief. As Toby looks at his hands -- which are now clean -- Jefferson orders everybody to go have a drink while he checks for Scooti. Following up the group, the Doctor and Rose help Toby up. He insists that he doesn't remember what happened; Rose grabs his arm and prescribes some "Protein One." The domestics approach. The Doctor ribs Rose for "going native," but she winks at him: "Oi, don't knock it. It's nice. Protein One with just a dash of Three," she says, snapping her fingers.
Habitation 3 is apparently the canteen, where everybody goes nuts looking for Scooti, who is clearly not there. Ida has checked Habitation 4, and Jefferson is still reading her bio chip in the area. They call to her over the wrist comms, but there's no answer. Jefferson asks Zach about it, but Zach says that she's in Habitation 3, where they are, and that there's a lack of communication, a breakdown error, that the Doctor solves like a slice: "I've found her." The violin begins again as they all look upward, following his gaze. Rose gasps, staring up through the ceiling at Scooti's body, floating creepily just outside. "Sorry," says the Doctor quietly. "I'm so sorry." The rest of them stare up, silent. Jefferson calls it in: "Captain. Report Officer Scootori Manista PKD, deceased. 43K2.1." Zach, in the control room, looks sad hearing it. Ida pulls back from tears and starts the shutters closing: "She was twenty. Twenty years old." The Doctor stares up gravely as the music gets awesome and Scooti begins drifting up, toward the black hole. "'For how should Man die better than facing fearful odds? For the ashes of his father...and the temples of his Gods,'" mumbles Jefferson. Somehow making a joke about the recaps before they were even written. (It's from Macaulay, his very boring and to-the-point poem Horatius, from 1842, all about this one-eyed man who defended the bridge to Rome from the Etruscans. All the men with him fled in panic, and the ones who didn't left when he told them to, as the Etruscans bore toward them. (In some accounts, it is stated that there were two men who stayed with Horatius while the others fled: the brave ones. The Idas and the Jeffersons and the poor Zachs.) The bridge goes out, the line of communication that the Etruscans must not cross, must not communicate themselves. But it's too late.
