Rose and the others reach Exploration, and she immediately snags the comm: "Doctor? Are you there? Doctor? Ida? Can you hear me?" Zach tells her that comms are still down. "I can patch them through the central desk and boost the signal. Just give me a minute." Too long. Jump.
The Doctor releases another hook. That's Zach. "I didn't ask. Have you got any sort of faith, or...?" She sits at the edge of the Pit. Ida at the edge of the Pit, looking down into nothing. "Not really. I was brought up Neoclassic Congregational. Because of my mum, she was..." Small talk. She smiles. "My old mum. But no, I never believed." He asks if the Neoclassics have a Devil. "Not as such. Just the things that men do." Tell me the difference, then jump. "Same thing in the end," says the Doctor. So strong. She asks, then, as the arbiter of belief and thought, what the fuck the Doctor believes. "I believe...I believe I haven't seen everything," he replies. "I don't know -- it's funny, isn't it? The things you make up. The rules. If that Thing had said It came from beyond the universe, I'd believe it, but before the universe? Impossible. Doesn't fit my rule." Couldn't have said it better myself, you right idiot. Go get a mortgage before God knocks you to your knees again. "Still, that's why I keep traveling. To be proved wrong." Indeed. And that's how there was a show called Doctor Who. "Thank you, Ida." (And if you listen hard, this is where She starts singing. And She doesn't stop.)
"Don't go!" shouts Ida. She knows. The Doctor: "If they get back in touch. If you talk to Rose? Just tell her..." I don't want to hear this. "Tell her I..." He looks away. JUMP. He smiles to himself. "...Oh, she knows." She does. The Doctor lets go the final hook. That's Rose. He falls. He Falls. Into nothing. The TARDIS sings.
Rose: "Doctor? Are you there? Doctor, Ida? Can you hear me? Are you there, Doctor?" Ida calls back up: "He's gone. He Fell. Into the Pit. And I don't know how deep it is. Miles and miles and miles." Exactly as far as the TARDIS is miles away. (Î has to figure in somehow, right?) What the fuck, Rose wonders, does Ida mean, he "Fell"? "I couldn't stop him," she says quietly. "He said your name..." I nominate Ida for Companion. Ida Wisdom. She's the only one who had to watch it. I think of Nine (or was it Eight?), that moment at the button. That moment he had to jump. I hope he didn't have a Companion that day. I hope nobody had to watch him do that. Or what happened next. Zach takes the mic from Rose; she stares straight ahead. "I'm sorry," he says. Words.
