They take cover before Victor and Jack burst in, with Victor claiming that King's Ransom has been pumped full of steroids -- "enough to make his heart pop." Well, no wonder he's so easily irritated. Victor goes on if he hadn't been looking for the drugs, he wouldn't have found them, but he's a pro, which is how he knows that without the 'roids, King's Ransom won't be remotely fit to race, so someone's obviously trying to pump up his value and pass off shitty merchandise. He leaves, and as Jack seethes in frustration, Margaret tries to parse what this all means. However, Jack's rage builds to the point where he takes a shovel and bangs the metal end against the bars on the horse's pen, causing sparks to fly. The horse spooks, and Margaret reflexively screams, alerting Jack to her presence. He moves toward her, but is delayed by another horse coming flying out of its cage, which gives Nicolas and Margaret the chance to run. Outside, they catch their breath for a moment and talk about exposing Jack for apparently having killed Margaret with the same stuff he gave the horse, but then the man in question appears and tries to brain Nicolas with the shovel. Nicolas, however, manages to stab him in the side with what looks like a stirrup to me [Some kind of hook? For carrying saddles, maybe? - Z], and he follows his mom out of there at a dead run.

Adelle's sitting in her darkened office when Boyd enters and informs her that Margaret was killed with the same drug that was given to the horse, only it was masked so the coroner didn't find it, which is consistent with what Victor said about having to suspect it was there in order to find it. He suggests he might be able to help by going in, but Adelle snaps, "She has a new handler. You're going to have to get used to it." He concedes that that's true [Although, have we seen her new handler this episode? Especially since she's being chased with a shovel right now? - Z], and then asks if she's aware of the "Topher situation." She laughs somewhat grimly and says there's no need to bring it up with him -- she allows him one of these "diagnostic tests" every now and again. We see Sierra coming to him with what looks like a Twinkie or something on a plate -- with candles in it, so it seems like it's his birthday. And I should add that I was sure the first time around they had offscreen sex, because it's Topher, and how could I not think that, but despite all the jokes I made, on second viewing I don't think they did, both because the entire plotline comes off as very geekily wholesome, and because it's Fox and I frankly think they would have shown it if it had happened. [Good point -- I think Topher talks a good game, but is possibly asexual. And the fact that they were tossing a football around, and that he didn't care which Active he got, I really think he would have been just as happy with a dude. - Z] Anyway, Adelle goes on to Boyd that loneliness only leads to detachment, and sometimes "the people who most need to reach out are the people least capable of it." She's probably including herself in that category, continuing to rationalize her use of Victor last episode and before, and explicitly adds that it only happens once a year. We see her watching Topher and Sierra happily horsing around, and then...
