After an establishing shot of an apartment building, Adelle rings a doorbell, and the door opens to reveal... Madeline, or November or Mellie if you prefer. Nice -- I can't say I was expecting to see her again. With a noncommittal look on her face, she shows Adelle in, and inside, she tells Adelle that she hasn't worked a day since she got back, and she never thought she'd be among the idle rich. And her money came through with the economy at rock bottom, too. She's one lucky girl, except for the dead daughter and all. Anyway, they chat a bit more, but eventually Madeline cuts off the small talk, saying it's nice to see Adelle and all, "but I have this irrational fear that if I say one wrong thing, men in suits are going to throw me in a black van and take me away." One man's feast is another man's famine. Adelle, however, tells her that her obligation to the Dollhouse is complete, but she hasn't come in for her "diagnostic," and she really should have herself checked out. Madeline wonders if her concern has anything to do with the reason she was let out of her contract years early, a reason Adelle never shared with her, but Adelle is like, "Look, honey, you're coming in for the diagnostic even if I have to throw you in a van myself," and Madeline, whose attempts in this scene to meet Adelle on her own lofty level have been a pathetic joke, hears that loud and clear.
In the morning, Echo runs down the stairs and heads for the door, but Nate catches her there and asks where she's heading. He looks bright and fresh-faced while she looks shaken and drawn, which isn't my understanding of what last night was supposed to accomplish. She tries to tell him she's just taking Jack for a walk, but when Nate sees her car keys in her hand, she covers that she was going to drive them to the park, then take a walk. Nate doesn't seem to suspect anything, although that could just be an act on this part so as not to raise her suspicions, but he does tell her he took the day off, and also, she can't drive anywhere because he took her car to the shop to have the brake pads replaced. He starts to take Jack from her, suggesting she go back to bed, but fighting through her increasing panic, she tells him she really needs to feed the boy, so Nate relents and allows her to take him back upstairs once she promises to have a nap when she's done...
