Hush, Little Baby, Don't You Cry…

Echo hops out of the car and starts to walk, but does a quick about face when she sees the van nearby, which makes sense, given that she took Sierra's car and all. She rushes around the corner and luckily finds a police car and two officers there, and tells them someone's trying to take her baby. Of course, when she turns around, the van is gone, which is fairly ridiculous even for this show, but the policemen take her seriously enough to bring her into the station...

...wherein she tells a female office that she knows it sounds crazy, but her husband is trying to kill her and get rid of the baby as well. The officer is sympathetic, saying that often women in these situations wait to do something until it's too late, and then she flashes a large IRONY ALERT sign in advance of Echo telling her that it's like her husband went away and was replaced by a stranger, like, reaaaaal subtle, show. I mean, make us think all you want about questions of identity and the soul, but don't waste our time with switcheroo bullshit like this. Anyway, the officer tells her they'll get her husband in for questioning and have a judge issue a restraining order, which would be a handy thing to have right about now, as Nate and Ballard are just entering the place. Echo tells the officer as such, and the officer says they're talking to her captain, so she's going to check things out, but don't worry -- she's safe. This, of course, is an assertion that's disproved in about 0.3 seconds once the officer gets into the conversation, as all four of them then look back at Echo like she's an escaped mental patient, which probably isn't far from the story Ballard and Nate just spun. Echo, however, misreads the situation and heads over with the baby, telling Nate she can't hurt her in there, but Nate repeats what he told the officers -- Jack is his baby, but Echo isn't his wife. Cold as that may be, it does have the advantage of being true, and the police remand Echo into Ballard's care, as he's conveniently still using his FBI ID to pull rank. Echo of course freaks out, continuing to do so even as Ballard and another goon physically manhandle her out of there, and while much of this story is extremely trite it's still partially saved by Eliza convincingly playing the fiercely devoted mother. If they never use this "new protocol" again, though, I'll be even more annoyed with this episode in retrospect.
