Molesley chats with Matthew about his post-wedding plans, and when Matthew tells him he expects him and Mrs. Byrd to look after Isobel when he's gone, Molesley's voice goes up quicker than a newly-made eunuch as he tells Matthew he thought he'd be needing a proper valet once he got hitched. Matthew tells Molesley that he's always thought of him as "a butler who helps out as a valet," and Molesley's too focused on the fact that he won't be going to work in "the big house" to even care if there's a compliment in there. Matthew tells him that he's looking forward to living more simply, which is pretty much exactly what I would expect out of marrying Lady Mary, and adds that Isobel "absolutely relies" on Molesley and that's only like the fifth ludicrous thing he's said in a forty-five-second scene.
So Thomas is now Lord Grantham's valet in Bates' absence, and he's like, oh, the new footman showed up and isn't he a tall one! Lord Grantham is like, new footman equals more money OH MY STARS...
...and the next thing you know, he's finding Lady Cora and asking her about it. She reminds him that they talked about it the night before right before he told her about going to London for no reason she was supposed to know about, and he's like, oh right. But don't hire anyone else for any reason ever and boy, this wedding is sure going to be expensive, huh? Lady Cora's basically asks if he's met their daughter and Lord Grantham runs off again. He'd better enjoy all the rooms into which he can disappear while he can.
