One of the guards that was involved in getting Craig out of there turns up, forks over Anna's missing letters and explains that they came when Bates was "out of favor. Now, you're in favor again." I... can't say I really get why bringing Craig down clears Bates' name in the eyes of the prison governor; I suppose it's possible he now finds Craig and Co.'s accusations toward Bates tainted, but that doesn't really sounds like what the guy is saying. Bates apparently sees it the same way, as he asks what he did to get back in favor, but the guard merely cryptically replies that he should watch out for a Mr. Durham, mentioned earlier by Bates' friend as Craig's dealer ally on the outside. "You're not a favorite with him." Well, I appreciate the show's efforts to make Bates more interesting by surrounding him with shadowy prison intrigue. It's not working, but I appreciate it. Bates, however, ignores his comments in favor of reading Anna's letters, for which I don't begrudge him.
Downstairs, Carson smells smoke and rushes into the offending room, bucket in hand -- only to find that Mrs. Hughes has had a little mishap caused by turning the electric toaster up too high. Recovering quickly, he announces that he figured Branson would be the one to burn the place down, not Mrs. Hughes, which both explains how quick he was on the fire-control draw and is pretty hilarious...
