Not-Poole tells Alex to tell the truth so he can stop running from who he really is. Alex says he's been doing that. Not-Poole heads for the door, saying that maybe Alex needs some time to reflect. He leans over Alex's shoulder and points to the one-way mirror, telling Alex to stare at the reflection until he figures out who he is. He heads for the door, and as he starts to leave, Alex calls him back. Not-Poole sits down, and Alex says, "The truth is, I can't stop running." He says that if he doesn't get to Rome, his wife may die. He adds that if confessing to the robbery would save his wife, he'd do it, and he pleads for Not-Poole to let him go. Not-Poole stares at him, then starts cackling and says, "It's about time!" Alex blinks, and Not-Poole says that only winning the Race will save Kathryn. He chuckles, "This pantywaist landscaper from Nebraska? You really think he's got a shot?" He points to the crime scene photos and says, "This is the guy that you need to be again!" He goes on about how the Race demands more from a person than just driving fast. Then he stands up, grabs a chair, and smashes the one-way mirror. Behind it is, well, a soundstage, and in the middle of the room is Alex's old Challenger. "But you are gonna have to do that, too," Not-Poole admits. The camera pulls back to reveal that the interrogation room is actually just a cunningly detailed set. Zounds!
Commercials. Here's a fun fact: the show's producers made the set for that scene by purchasing an actual police station and turning every part of it except the interrogation room into a cunning simulation of an empty soundstage.
Wendy walks back to the minivan with a bag of goodies, nattering about how she got chocolate with and without nuts because she was unclear about Ivy's nut preferences. Suddenly she stops and watches as Ivy sets the car seat down on the ground. Ivy explains that she's making room so she can stretch out. See, she's worried about leg cramps, too! Wendy carefully explains, "That's Sam's car seat. Put it back." Ivy picks up the car seat and places it in the back of the minivan as she chirps that Sam isn't here. Wendy grabs Ivy's arm and says, "You need to put it back. You really, really need to put it back. And then you need to never touch it again, ever." Ivy quietly nods, and then Wendy releases her, all smiles, and goes back to discussing candy bars. I suspect that Ivy's just decided that she'd prefer fewer nuts.
John's cell phone rings. Violet guesses that it's her mother again. After some encouragement from Violet, John answers and quickly explains that he's taking Violet along to a conference he was just invited to in Seattle. He mentions how lovely the Puget Sound is, and then covers the phone and whispers, "Good detail?" to Violet. She gives him a thumbs-up. John returns to the phone and asks if Violet can stay a while and make up for her missed visit next month. After a pause, he smiles: "That's wonderful, Barbara. Thanks so much!" Then we see the other side of the conversation, featuring John's very confused doctor. The doctor says, "I called because your work said you'd left town, and I wanted to make sure you had enough meds while you were traveling." He stresses that the meds are "the only thing buying [John] time." John whatevers and tells "Barbara" to call anytime, then hangs up. Violet expresses her amazement at John's prevarications, and John smiles, "I had a great teacher."
