Kelly loved that they did an uptempo number although she tries to find a nice way to say that it was corny, and settles for hokey. Robin thought it was the wrong song for John, and his movements got a little awkward. John thought his vocals were great but the moves made it feel a little Broadway. Is that a coded way of saying "gay cabaret"? Because I agree. All of the superstars emphasize that John has a great voice and will go far in the competition. And John ends up in second place. BOOOOOOOO!
Robin is singing with Olivia Chisholm first, and he's chosen "Where's the Love?" by Donny Hathaway and Roberta Flack. She's worried because she's not familiar with the song. Robin explains that he chose it because they have good chemistry, and also because when they're play fighting, his wife sings it to him. Gross. As they rehearse, Olivia doesn't know the lyrics yet and Robin is annoyed. When they finally perform, there's something really wrong. I don't know if it's because she doesn't know the song well enough, but their harmonies sound off, and there's no chemistry between them at all. Robin sounds pitchy at parts, even. They keep cutting to Jennifer looking puzzled, watching. I am making the same face on my couch at home. I mean, seriously, there's not much to this song other than "Where is the love?" and Olivia keeps getting that part wrong. And then during the keyboard solo Robin keeps riffing, like it's not about you, dude. The whole thing is pretty awful.
John just says that it was lovely. Jennifer thought it was a great performance but she heard some pitchiness that she thought came from a lack of confidence. She thinks Olivia's song last week featured her voice better. Kelly jokes that the song barely has any lyrics. Hey, I just said that, Kelly! I think Kelly and I could hang. Anyway, Kelly loves Olivia's voice, but that didn't show it off as well as it could have. Take that, Robin. Maybe you should think about songs that will make your partner sound good instead of what you want to sing yourself. Anyway, Olivia is deservedly in last place now. So to recap after the first round of singers, the standings from top to bottom are Bridget, John, Jordan, and then Olivia.
John Legend's other partner, Johnny Grey, is out of the competition "due to unforeseen circumstances." Well, now I need to know what happened. I tried a quick search but apparently the story hasn't come out yet, although Johnny's own Twitter says that he didn't drop out, and it's good news. Maybe he got a recording contract or something? Anyway, John had to do a quick search to find a replacement, and he ended up choosing a lady named Meleana Brown, and they'll be singing "Endless Love." I do love this song. It always reminds me of Phoebe and Chandler singing it on Friends. Wasn't Lionel Richie originally supposed to be one of the superstars on the show? Anyway, this version is pretty bland. I don't love Meleana's voice. It gets a little nasal when she tries to sing loud. And I find that when John performs at the piano, his chemistry with his duet partner takes a dive.
