The perp is wheeled into Trauma Green. Chen tiredly calls for two units of O-neg as they try to transfer the perp to the table. Malik notices that the patient is cuffed to the gurney, so no transfer is possible. Neela asks for the key, but the cops deny any knowledge that keys even exist in the world. Chen is disgusted, and tells Neela to handle the thoracotomy, but Neela can't do the procedure until the guy is uncuffed so that she can access his side. Finally, a key shows up. Neela asks Backseat Cop if he really needs to be there, and he says that as long as the suspect is uncuffed, he's sticking around. Yeah, this half-dead guy is a real threat to society. And aren't there crimes going on in Chicago? It seems like every cop in the district is waiting for Eddie to recover. I get that they are worried, but can't they be worried while they drive around and stop crime? Neela points out that the patient isn't about to hop up and shoot someone, and Chen tells the cop to back off. Backseat Cop asks if the guy has a chance, and Neela mutters, "Why do you think they're letting me crack his chest?" Good point.
Frank and Abby argue over whether or not the miniature pony can stay. I bet you can guess what side Frank is on. Remember when Frank had a heart attack and he was nice for, like, three minutes? Carter walks up, and Abby introduces him to Mrs. Gelden, a blind woman, and her guide horse, Ruby. I half expected Carter to have a flashback to that old dude, Ruby, played by Red Buttons. Strange name choice by the writers, because I can't be the only longtime viewer that made that association. Carter strokes the horse's mane for a minute and tells Frank that the horse stays.
As Carter walks off, a cop comes up and tells him that Eddie's son has arrived. Carter promises to check and see if Eddie is able to accept visitors. The cop walks back over to the son, who's fifteen, and his mom, Eddie's ex-wife (hereafter "The Ex").
Dubenko is working on Eddie, and determines that he can't operate because Eddie's wound is too close to the skull and they can't control the bleeding. Carter enters and announces that the son has arrived. Mallory is happy to hear that Arlo, the son, is there, and clarifies for the doctors that she's not Arlo's mother. Arlo and The Ex walk in. Mallory reassures Arlo that it's not as bad as it looks. The Ex gets all pissy that Mallory is allowed in the room, so I guess it wasn't an amicable divorce. I would even venture a guess that Mallory might have had something to do with the split, based on the animosity. Arlo tries to calm things down until Susan takes charge and announces that Mallory should step outside, and that they can each take turns sitting with Eddie. She orders Arlo to say hello quickly so that they can take X-rays of Eddie. Arlo walks up to Eddie's head and says hello. Susan explains that Eddie can't talk, due to the tube. Arlo assures Eddie that he'll be fine, and that he's tough. Susan dispatches Shane to take Arlo and The Ex to the family room, and to answer their questions.
