Emily is pacing in her room when Luka comes in. Emily bites his head off about having to wait so long, like she has anywhere to go. Luka asks her to sit down. Emily breathlessly demands, "Did you do the test?" Luka sighs heavily and confirms, "You are pregnant." Happily, Emily exclaims, "I knew it! What about the fumes?" Luka says that they shouldn't be a problem. Emily says that's good: "I want a healthy baby." Luka asks whether she's thought about her options. She asks what he means. He asks, "Can you take care of a baby?" Emily blithely says, "Well, there's day care in high school." There is? Huh. I'm not sure how I feel about that. On the one hand, it's great for there to be a publicly funded place for teen mothers to leave their kids while they pursue their high-school education, so that they don't drop out and limit their options for the future. On the other, it's a bit chilling to see a girl who's probably twelve chirp, "There's day care in high school!" as if that takes care of all the difficulties inherent in teen motherhood. Anyway, Emily adds that her mom can help take care of the baby until Emily gets to ninth grade, and has access to said day care. Luka asks whether Emily's mom knows she's pregnant. Emily shakes her head no. Luka suggests that Emily tell her, but Emily objects on the ground that her mom will "freak out completely." Luka tries his last card: "It's a big decision." "No, it's not," Emily opines. "All my life I've wanted a baby." Yow.
