A shot of a little kid, Edgar, lying glumly on his side as Luka tells Carter that Edgar's mom is an ICU nurse who's trying to find someone to fill in for her. Carter leafs through the chart and asks, "What are you thinking, meningitis?" In answer, Luka lists Edgar's symptoms: "Fever, vomiting, headache -- I need you to help me with the LP." Football helmet? Check. Carter asks if Edgar's lethargic, and Conni says that he's sleepy -- "we gave him Verced." Luka asks Carter to roll Edgar up "in a ball." Mouthpiece? Check. Carter positions himself over Edgar and holds him behind the head and legs and tells him not to worry, "everything's going to be juuuust fine." Shoulder-pads? Check. Shin-guards? Check. Carter looks terribly uncomfortable and closes his eyes as Luka says, "Okay, here we go. Steady," and he continues to narrate the procedure, but his voice fades into the background as we hear another audio flashback to the day of the stabbing: Sobriki screaming, Lucy sounding terrified and asking what to do, Carter urging her to keep going. But with all my protective equipment on, I hardly felt the skillet blows at all this time. The flashback goes on for nearly a minute. Carter looks away from the tap itself, clenching his jaw, and finally the audio overdub fades out on Luka telling Edgar that the medication will wear off in a minute "and you won't feel so sleepy, okay? Thanks, Carter." Carter doesn't hear him, and doesn't move. "Carter?" Luka prompts him. "Thanks." We can't really tell if Luka sees what's happening here or not, but Carter comes to and stammers, sure, no problem, and he looks like he has a bad taste in his mouth.
