Luka swiftly runs after Carter and asks if he knows anyone in the State Department. Rather than go, "Wha --" Carter asks why, and then determines that he doesn't have time to do anything about it anyway and tells Luka in a thick voice that it's a bad time. Luka promptly leaves, his face not registering much of anything. Nice try. Fighting emotion while dialing his father, Carter asks Jerry to find Abby and fetch her. He reaches his father and, sniffling slightly, arranges to collect him from the airport that evening.
When Carter hangs up, Abby's there. "I've been looking for you!" she says. "I've been looking for you," he replies tiredly. Pratt interrupts with Andrew, whose sore throat and inflamed epiglottis are causing real breathing problems. Carter and Abby run over to assist Pratt with his first crike. While they work, Carter and Abby miscommunicate: He asks if she's ready to leave, she cheerfully says she is. "Good, I don't want to do this alone," he says, relieved. Abby blinks. "What are you talking about?" she asks. "The arrangements, everything has to be taken care of..." he begins. Abby repeats that she doesn't understand. "What are you talking about?" Carter asks, confused. "Going to get Eric," she duhs brightly. Carter pales as Abby explains that he called from a truck stop outside Des Moines. "Oh, and I need a script for Depakote and Zyprexa," she says. Carter is shell-shocked. "What's wrong?" she asks. He breaks the news that Gamma is dead. She is an ex-Gamma. She is no more. Even Pratt looks sad, and Abby is totally floored. "Oh, Carter, I'm so sorry," she breathes. "No one told me." Pratt takes over so that they can have a moment.
