Sam and Luka meet up in the drug room. Sam tries to make conversation, but Luka is his usual monosyllabic self. Sam asks Luka to just say that he's mad. Luka denies that he is. Sam sarcasms, "Right, it didn't bother you one bit that I went over your head." When Luka doesn't respond, Sam points out that this is the same issue they discussed this morning -- that Luka won't tell her how he feels. Luka says it's fine. Sam says it's not, and that if it were, he wouldn't have avoided touching her when she squeezed by him. She accuses him of burying his feelings and pretending he doesn't have them. Luka says he does have feelings, but that he doesn't have to share them all the time, especially at work. Haleh sneaks in and apologizes for interrupting, but that Megan is in pain. Luka orders more morphine. Sam looks at Luka sadly and leaves. I have to say that Sam can be immature, but Luka is being incredibly passive-aggressive lately. If he doesn't want to be in the relationship, that's fine, but he can't just force Sam to be a mind-reader and then get mad at her when she doesn't get it. I think the first lesson of relationships is that you have to say what you want, even when it's difficult, or you can't be mad when you don't get it.

Carter finds Susan getting a snack from the vending machine. She tries to be cheerful and ask how the cake was. Carter says they should have waited and had a cake for both of them. Susan continues to fake cheer, but Carter can tell that something's wrong, so Susan admits that she didn't get tenure. Carter asks who got the other slot, and Susan says there was only one slot, and Carter got it. Carter still can't believe it, and Susan says it was too bad they applied the same year. She's trying to keep from losing it, and walking away from Carter as fast as she can, but he's following. He seems a little offended by her last remark and asks what she means by that, and if she's saying that his funding of the clinic got him tenure. Well, now that you mention it. Susan stammers that he's putting words in her mouth. Carter hitches up his pants and says that he's worked his ass off for eleven years, brought in grants, published, taught, and never asked for this. He brought in grants? And published? When? Susan seizes on his last statement and says that he never wanted tenure. She says emotionally, "This is my home. This is where I started. This is where I want to stay. And I get the feeling that, half the time, you would rather be anywhere but here." Wow. I get the feeling that you could substitute "million-dollar contract" for "tenure" and "network drama" for "County" and that would have been a pretty intense conversation for those two actors in particular.
