Allison better watch herself, because Tess has only been in charge of GD for one day and already there are big changes: the helicopter is back! She talks to a bathrobed and tired Allison over the computer, who gives her some last-minute instructions and also lets us know that Henry won't be in this episode, either. He's "away at NASA," a.k.a. directing the episode. It's cool that they let Joe Morton do some behind-the-scenes work, but maybe they could have let him direct an episode that wasn't already missing one of the main cast members? Tess quickly tires of Allison's orders and tells her to "go be a mom already." Ha! Allison hasn't been a mother to Kevin in years. Good luck, new baby.

Carter comes downstairs to find Zoe's nose in several books. But it's not homework -- it's college research. "But you're a junior," Carter says. Yeah, and she'll be applying to schools early in her senior year, so this is pretty much the right time for this. Way to parent, Carter. Moreover, Zoe says, the rest of her classmates knew what they were doing years ago thanks to the SCAT (Student Career Assessment Test), which is no doubt closely related to the POOP (Personal Own Occupational Positions) exam. Zoe didn't take the SCAT until just last week even though she's attended Tesla for a few years now. Way to drop the ball, Tesla. She hasn't gotten the results yet, but knows she wants to be a doctor after helping Allison deliver one baby so the SCAT is actually kind of unimportant, right? "I loved it," Zoe says of her baby-delivering experience. Someone needs to tell her that being a doctor is about a lot more than catching a baby on its way out of the womb. If that's the big draw for her, why not look into being a midwife? Carter's just kind of spooked to suddenly realize that his daughter will be leaving him soon. "I will always be here!" SARAH pipes up, ruining the moment. This somehow leads to Zoe asking Carter about his relationship with Tess and saying it's okay if he wants her to sleep over some time. Carter cuts her off even faster than he did SARAH. "I'm just saying -- life's short," Zoe says. Yeah, too short to have a sex talk with your dad. Come on now. There's being mature about stuff and then there's being creepy. Carter has never been happier to be summoned into work.

Jo pulls up to find Carter waiting at a snowy mountain road. She cheerfully offers to help out, even though he says it's "not really a two-person job." "Zane's coming home," Jo smiles. She's in such a good mood that she's willing to let all of Eureka turn to shit while the only two law enforcement officials in town are wasting manpower up the road. The reason for Jo's cheerfulness is that Zane is due back in town after being away for the last month. I thought it seemed less annoying around there. Jo recaps her love life over the past few years: Callister (pre-Season 1, robot), Taggart (end of Season 1/beginning of Season 2, disappeared), and now Zane (end of Season 2 until now, annoying and kind of character-ruining). I guess compared to a malfunctioning robot and a dropped storyline most likely due to budget cuts making the show unable to afford Matt Frewer, Zane does seem nice. Jo asks Carter about his relationship with Tess, because apparently everyone wants to know about that today. Why, I have no idea. Personally, I find it all very dull. Carter finds it awkward. Instead, he exposits why they're out on the mountain road: to keep the road clear for an incoming GD transport. It soon arrives: a tractor-trailer truck towing the longest trailer ever seen as well as some pretty poor CGI graphics. If you don't have the time or the budget to make the computer graphics convincing, don't do them at all. And especially don't cut to it more than once.
