Three hours into the S5 tour, Carter whines that it's boring. Apparently, all Tess has shown him thus far is a bunch of closed labs. He wants to see an open, working one. Tess says he's in luck, because there's one right behind her. "Don't bother. Johnson said he'd be traveling for a few days," says a random guy in the hallway who should really mind his own business. Tess says that'll work out perfectly: they can explore the lab without bothering Johnson. They walk in and Carter asks what the lab is developing. "APS. Alternate Propulsion Systems," Tess says. "Like rockets!" Carter says, trying to make friendly conversation. "Yeah, that would be the systems we already have," Tess snots back. I don't like her. But she does have a point that Carter's a moron, as he then proceeds to step on a large lit circular panel in the middle of the floor without asking if it's dangerous or leads to another dimension or anything like that. His voice goes all echo-y and he complains that his teeth feel weird, so that's got to be instant cancer at the very least. Tess awkwardly steps on the pad next to Carter to tell him to get down, and then they both step off. Tess trips over something on the ground and falls into Carter's arms so as to produce sexual tension.
They leave the lab and walk into the elevator along with that random guy from the hallway. He immediately puts his headphones in and starts singing along to "Car Wash" by Rose Royce. Both Tess and Carter smile at the sight of a non-uptight GD employee, as if they're not uptight themselves. The elevator arrives at its destination, and the guy immediately stops singing and de-elevators with his cart of random objects. Tess and Carter part ways.
Carter sees Henry in the lobby and tells him about S5 being re-opened, even though Allison told Carter that was a secret. Henry doesn't respond, just tells Allison that he did some checking and the disturbances in Café Diem and Carter's office have nothing to do with "the signal." He adds that the signal is getting stronger, but they really don't have anything to be afraid of until right around the season finale. With that, Allison and Henry walk away without acknowledging Carter's presence. He turns to Fargo and asks him if he knows what the signal they're talking about is, but Fargo doesn't respond to him, either, not even when Carter yells at him. Then Drechmeyer walks up with his TIRD detector. Carter tries to talk to him, obviously desperate at this point to get someone -- anyone -- to verify his existence. Drechmeyer doesn't respond either, although he is reading high amounts of TIRDs in Carter's location. He walks away, and Carter asks if anyone can see him. Only one person responds in the affirmative, but it's Tess, and she's having the same invisibility problem. Then Fargo walks right through Carter, which doesn't look pleasant for Carter but which Tess thinks is really cool. "Do that again!" she says. Why don't you do it if you like it so much, Tess? Carter isn't finding this amusing in the least. "Are we dead?" he asks.
