It took almost a year, but Eureka is finally back from its mid-season break! Why can't the
Sci Fi Syfy Channel just be honest and call it a season finale and then this can be the Season 4 premiere? It makes no sense. Anyway, last time on Eureka, Carter got fired. Now he's in Los Angeles, interviewing for a job with the Department of Homeland Security, who claim that his résumé is excellent, even though it has him quitting his U.S .Marshall job to be the sheriff of a small town, which he was then fired from. The interviewer even asks Carter if anything exciting ever happened during his two years of small-town life. Carter flashes back to many exciting moments, but says nothing.
Back in Eureka, Carter exposits to Henry that he's not allowed to say anything about his old job to his interviewer because Eureka is top-secret. Henry just says that he hopes Carter doesn't get the Homeland Security job, which is kind of mean, then takes off to check out some crackles in an antenna array THAT WILL BE IMPORTANT LATER (THIS SEASON). Carter heads for Café Diem, where Zoe still works. She's anxious for news on her father's job, since wherever he ends up working will be where she goes, too. Also, she's had way too many job-perk espressos. Carter assures Zoe that if he gets the Homeland Security job, it won't start until she finishes her school semester, so the transition will be as easy as possible for her. Except that I don't see how Carter is allowed to live in Eureka if he doesn't work there, let alone take advantage of the free food and rent. Carter then tries to order a burger from Vincent, who is too sad about Carter's job loss to do it. While he's waiting for Vincent to pull it together and cook, Carter makes the rounds and spots Jo sitting at a nearby table with her breakfast. He says she looks ready to assume her new Sheriff position. Jo reminds him that she doesn't have it yet, but both Jo and Carter seem pretty sure it'll happen soon. Jo does say that while she's happy for the promotion, this isn't the way she wanted to get it.
So, with all of that, you'd think that Carter had only just lost his job a few days ago, since the residents are still depressed about it, Carter has only just started looking for new work, and the DoD has yet to choose his successor. But then Allison waddles over looking very pregnant, so that means it's actually been several months. Huh? "Look at you!" Carter says, as if he hasn't seen Allison looking pregnant before. Maybe she just woke up that morning with a ton of baby weight? I guess that would explain the weird timing. Allison has news about the Sheriff position, and since it isn't that Carter has been re-hired, he and Jo assume that Jo got the job. Allison lets Jo smile and bask in the glory of her promotion for a few seconds before shutting her down and saying Jo isn't the new Sheriff. The DoD hired someone else, and he'll be there soon.
