We open in Café Diem, where Zoe is serving breakfast to her boyfriend, who then tries to get a kiss out of her. He is not successful in this effort, as Jack is sitting right there at the counter and, as town sheriff, nothing gets by his watchful eye. He demands more coffee from the waitress immediately before she can make lip-to-lip contact with Lucas. Well, what did they expect? They know Jack is overprotective and they know he's sitting right there watching their every move. It's like they're teasing him. Vincent walks up and makes Jack feel even worse by reminding him that Stark and Allison just got engaged. What a pal! Jack was already bummed out because he misses Henry. "It doesn't seem right without him around," Jack says. "It feels like the whole town's out of balance." With that, Zoe drops, like, fifty plates. Geddit? Balance? Either that's the theme of today's episode, or New Balance shoes is the new in-show sponsor. Or both!
Over at GD, Eva Thorne's new cost-cutting measures include a hiring freeze and laying off seventy-five employees. No one says it, but I'll bet Dr. Edison from last week was one of the bootees. Stark, Eva, and Allison march purposefully around the lab, and while Stark protests Eva firing some of his staff, he does not go so far in his objections as to volunteer cutting some of his own salary to save money and perhaps a job or two. Eva remorselessly tells him that she's all about making changes to both GD and the town at large, and reminds Stark and Allison that she's their boss "until [she's] successful" or her ulterior motives are revealed. "I hope you're still here to see me go," she cheerfully says to Allison and Stark, as if threatening people's jobs was funny.
With that, she opens the door to a new lab that houses the stupid antiperspirant product placement that's only going to get worse as the season rolls on. By episode ten, it's all they'll be talking about. Storylines will revolve around it and characters will apply deodorant non-stop throughout the episode. You just wait. Anyway, I'm not paid to recap commercials, so I won't, except to say that Zane has been appointed head of the product placement lab, which is very fitting. Eva says that "research needs commerce," which is why we have products like Viagra and still no cure for cancer. And then a man walks around the lab with his hand on fire for no reason. I'm going to take that to mean that Degree antiperspirant will cause you to spontaneously combust. Buyer beware!
Time for Henry's obligatory appearance! Jack visits him in jail. Neither man is in a particularly good mood. Henry says he's about to be moved to a super-max prison in Colorado, which is not good news. He asks Jack to tell him about the weather, since he doesn't get to see sunsets anymore. Before Jack can do that, he gets a 911 page from Allison and has to go. On his way out, he and Henry both share a look that says that this sucks and will only get suckier, no matter how much they both try to pretend it won't.
