Cut to Lan up on a stack of books, looking for something among some shelves. She's on the phone with Derek. Suddenly, she screams -- she found the head in a jar from the first episode. Derek asks if she's okay. Aw, he's in love with her! My interpretation. Anyway, Derek explains that she's looking for some record that Adam was in Cassadaga, like "a notebook or a file." Lan finds "a videotape labeled 'Cassadaga,'" and says that she'll bring it to them. Hey, I was just thinking that Lan never gets to go on the little field trips! Great!
Blipvert. Shop Girl walks around her shop, which appears to be a bookstore, and hears a noise. The door opens, which startles her, but it's the Freakylinks gang. Shop Girl threatens to call the police. Very unfriendly, that one. Derek explains about the twin thing, and shows her a picture, while Chloe explains that they need to know why he was there, and they can't ask him because he's dead. Shop Girl starts crying at the news that Adam is dead, which bugs Chloe a bit. Cut to Shop Girl explaining to the gang that Adam interviewed Ashcroft, and that both she and Adam loved the book. Chloe's all, "What do you mean?" and Shop Girl says that she and Adam were "kindred spirits," and asks if Chloe knew Adam. Chloe says, "Pretty well." Derek breaks the tension by asking what's upstairs.
Cut to a tour of the upstairs, Ashcroft's former apartment. Shop Girl explains that the people of the town took care of Ashcroft, letting him make free copies, stay rent-free, and such. Derek wants to know about the face-slapping and accusations of lying that happened earlier. Shop Girl says that Adam promised to get The Harbingers published again. Chloe's surprised to hear that Adam promised that, and Shop Girl says that she heard it from Ashcroft, not Adam, and that Ashcroft died a few days later, "in his sleep." Shop Girl says that it happened "three years ago, a week before Halloween." Derek gives Chloe a sharp look, and says that means it was "a week before Adam died." Chloe asks about Ashcroft's book, and Shop Girl says that everyone threw their copies away. Jason finds a busted-up video camera in a garbage can. Derek investigates and says that camera belonged to Adam. Just then, Derek's cell phone rings. It's Lan -- she has arrived in town. Derek asks her (well, tells her) to get online and access all of Adam's bank accounts, looking for any activity in Cassadaga. Derek also tells her that they have the VCR, and they'll be there soon, before he hangs up. Derek takes the garbage can containing the camera and walks out. Just when things were going really well for me and this episode, Derek has to spout some hokey dialogue that I won't bother repeating here. But it was hokey.
