Department of Defense. Walternate is in the lab, turning a piece of the doomsday device over in his hands. It kind of looks like a mechanical trilobite, but maybe I just have arthropods on the brain. Ugh... now my brain itches. Brandon walks in, apologizing for keeping Mr. Secretary waiting. Walternate ogles the trilobite some more. "I see the piece that Agent Dunham obtained was finally sent over," he says. Brandon says it's functional and will be "integrated" with the machine soon. Walternate kind of looks like he needs some time alone with the little doohickey, but Brandon brings up another matter. There's been a breakthrough with the Cortexiphan (although they don't use that word, since they don't know it here) they synthesized from the Olivia's brain. Brandon and Walternate watch a video of a young man being injected and then soon after causing objects in the room to float around. Moments later, he's screaming in agony and writhing around on the floor. Walternate wonders why this one developed telekinetic abilities when the nine other test subjects died within minutes. Brandon says they'll know more after they dissect his brain, but he thinks it's because this subject was the youngest of the group. "Which makes sense, given your notion that the human brain is infinitely capable at birth," Brandon says. "We simply need younger test subjects." He starts to suggest using children, but Walternate is already shaking his head in refusal. "Sir, we may be close," Brandon protests. "No children," Walternate says firmly. "That is not an option." He leaves the lab looking disturbed.
