Rory comes home late and gives Lorelai a copy of The Children's Hour that she picked up at the bookstore. Lorelai asks when she said she wanted to read that. They were watching Julia and she made the Hellman's Mayonnaise joke. Lorelai asks who Rory was with during her pizza and book buying. Rory gets awkward to say that she was with Jess. Lorelai is surprised. Rory leaves to go to her room.
Lorelai follows Rory to her room and asks how the picnic was. Rory says it was good. Lorelai asks whether the CuteDean situation has been taken care of. Rory says he's coming over later so that they can smooth things over. Lorelai says that smoothing is good. She asks how it is with Jess. Rory says it's fine. Rory asks what Lorelai wants to say. Lorelai says she never has anything to say. "Yes, that is your reputation," Rory says. Lorelai tells Rory that she's surprised she's hanging out with Jess, since he doesn't seem like a nice kid. Rory says that Lorelai doesn't know him very well. She says that she's just judging Jess based on that one time he was over. Lorelai says she can't wait to see Jess's good side. She says that based on the things she's seen and heard, the good side has yet to reveal itself. Rory asks for a list. Lorelai says, "The vandalism, the cutting school, the stealing, the fighting." Rory asks how she knows about the fighting, as if that negates all of the shitty things he's done that involve theft and porn. Lorelai says that she talked to CuteDean. Rory gets all mad and accuses CuteDean of "running to Mommy" to tattle. Ew. Lorelai says that he's really upset. Rory says that he could have talked to her. Lorelai says he couldn't because Rory was off with Jess. "You're taking his side?" Rory asks. Lorelai says she's not on either side. Rory says she wasn't off with Jess. He just outbid CuteDean. She was just following the picnic rules. Lorelai says they're all just worried about her getting hurt by Jess since he doesn't seem to be a very nice person at all. She says that Rory is young and naïve. Rory asks if Jess is no good. Lorelai says that she knows guys like Jess with the dangerous vibe, the problem with authority, and the Sylvester Stallone film addiction. Rory asks if Lorelai is now just talking about herself. I would have been so grounded. Lorelai says she knows what she's talking about. Rory is all hunched over as she says she can't believe she's having this conversation, and now she doesn't want to talk about it. Rory stomps off to take a walk. Lorelai says that CuteDean will be there any minute. Rory brats that he's probably just coming to talk to Lorelai anyway. More stomping off. My mother would smack all of these people for being so rude and sassy.
