It's Emily. "I need the hat rack," she says as soon as Lorelai picks up the phone. Lorelai smiles and whispers back, "The fish flies at night." Wow, they've put Lorelai in one ugly shirt. It's orange with giant Laugh-In flowers around the neck. Her black jacket is fighting a losing battle trying to cover it all up. The rest of the shirt is covered with triangles of orange, black and white. And some stripes. It looks like she's having to bus tables at a Mexican restaurant that's trying to figure out how to serve Mexican food with a Mexican flair, having never been any further south than Oklahoma. Emily is in full panic, and you can tell she is by the way she's clutching the middle buttons of her blouse together. She says she needs back the hat rack that she gave her. Michel is now listening in to Lorelai's end of the conversation. Emily says she gave Lorelai the hat rack for Christmas five years ago. Lorelai doesn't really remember it. Emily says it's large and has "dragons or weasels" or some large animal on it that you hang your coats on. Comedy Rule #92: Old rich people using "weasels" to describe any animal that is squirmy is always funny. Lorelai says that she has it. Emily says she needs it back. Lorelai can't believe that Emily is taking a Christmas present back. She also can't believe that Emily gave her an unwanted gift as a gift for Christmas. "You gave me a second-hand present. Like something you got at the junk store." Emily says that Lorelai is being a little dramatic. "What would Miss Manners say about this?" Lorelai chastises. Emily asks Lorelai to bring the rack with her when she comes to dinner tonight. Lorelai says she will. Emily thanks her and hangs up. Michel opens his mouth, so you know he got the last word in this scene, but for some reason they've cut it.
