We cut to the end of her telling Owen about the three infected patients, and Leah and Mere are standing back while they talk. Owen tells Bailey to call Infection Control and then tells Leah to pull all of her charts from that day (which I believe she already did) because they get to call every single patient she touched to have them come back in for an examination. He's pissed and declares that it's going to be a nightmare. Leah turns to Mere after the others leave and asks if they are going to fire her. Oh, girlfriend, no one but April ever gets fired from this hospital. Let's all go back to the LVAD situation -- if that didn't get an intern or two fired, nothing will. Mere just tells her not to think about it.
Mere then visits Cristina in Paul's room and when she asks if he is still unconscious, Cristina picks up his arm and lets it flop back down to the bed. I can only imagine the outtakes in this scene. Also, how funny would it be to be an actor and get that job? "You're going to speak two lines, and then lie unconscious for two full episodes while various people have conversations over your head." Cristina isn't worried about him and thinks he'll wake up in a couple of days, but is perturbed that Owen won't calm down about it. Mere mentions that Leah might be leaving the program and Cristina cares for half a second, but then goes back to worrying about Owen and wonders if he is starting to dislike being Chief, and maybe he misses teaching. Her reason for thinking that is his comment about Jeff not supervising her enough. Mere can't help but laugh as she points out that Owen might just be annoyed because Jeff really isn't supervising her. Cristina just thinks that offering to lethally inject Mere should have gotten her some friendly sympathy for at least the rest of the day.
Richard seeks out Derek to tell him about how Smash didn't scrub in with Richard on Seth's surgery because he was too busy getting an MRI just right for Derek. Derek just sighs, realizing he's about to lose his lattes. Smash of course runs up right then to ask Derek a question since he is setting his schedule for the next day, and Richard gives Derek a pointed look and leaves them alone. Derek tells Smash he has to let Heather do this stuff since she's the one on his service. Rather pathetically, Smash points out hopefully that Heather annoys Derek, but he just counters that Heather has better neuro instincts than Smash does. And while Smash makes up for it with tons of work, he wants to teach someone who has the natural flair for it. Smash is totally hurt by this and argues that this is what he is passionate about, hoping that will win Derek back over. But Derek realizes this is going to take some tough love and he announces that Heather is better at this than Smash is. He then softens as he tells Smash that he's going to be a great surgeon, and he should go and figure out where that will be because apparently it won't be in neuro. I still find it weird that two interns can't specialize in the same thing, but I've never been the med school, so maybe this is really is some crazy rule. When Heather walks up and says hi, Smash looks like she just ran over his dog and then finally shuffles off. Heather comments brightly that he can't seem to take a hint -- hmm, so maybe she does have a little bit of an edge after all. As they go to check on Rachel, Derek notes that he can smell her gum so we know that he really does find her annoying even if with all of her natural talent and pen-catching skillz.
